TMJ/TMD Treatments | Southard Dental
If you are experiencing headaches, stiff jaw muscles, and are having difficulties sleeping, you may have TMJ dysfunction, or “TMD”. At Southard Dental, Dr. Southard can help you get your life back to normal and minimize jaw pain, discomfort, and dysfunction.
What Causes TMJ/TMD?
There are several different things that can cause TMJ/TMD. Teeth grinding (bruxism) is a common cause of TMD. When you grind your teeth excessively, additional pressure is put on the TMJ joint, which can lead to irritation, inflammation, and pain.
Some kinds of arthritis can also affect the temporomandibular joint. This is the most common cause of TMJ in older individuals.
TMJ/TMD can also be caused by direct damage to your jaw. If you slip and fall and hit your jaw, for example, your temporomandibular joint could be knocked out of place, or damaged.
What Are The Most Common Symptoms Of TMJ/TMD?
Depending on your case, and the severity of your TMJ/TMD, there is a wide range of possible symptoms:
- Pain and tenderness in the upper jaw, near the ear
- Migraines and “radiating” facial pain
- Difficulty chewing harder foods
- “Locking” of the jaw when trying to chew, speak, or drink
- Clicking sounds or grating sensations when the mouth is moved
If you recognize one or more of these issues, you may have TMJ/TMD. Schedule an appointment today for a consultation.
How Is TMJ/TMD Treated?
There are many different options for TMJ treatment. Corticosteroid injections are effective for treating some more serious types of TMJ, while more minor cases may resolve with anti-inflammatory medications, and rest.
TMJ caused by bruxism can be treated with mouthguards. Custom mouthguards protect your teeth from direct contact, resulting in lessened stress on the temporomandibular joint.
In some cases, oral surgery is required to restore the joint, but this is typically only required in extremely severe cases of TMJ caused by impact injuries such as car accidents.
